All sacred writings contain an outer and inner meaning. Behind the literal word existed another range of meaning, another form of knowledge. This is seen throughout both the old and New Testament, but especially in the parables taught by Jesus in the Gospel’s. This piece I really tried to dive into words, their meaning, and a deeper visualization of meaning. The main text is taken from John chapter 1. It is the metaphor of the word, and the word being a beautiful representation of Christ. In his writing John used the Greek word logos, which we translate to “word”. But the meaning of logos is very powerful, it is the manifestation and representation of God. Jesus was this very thing. As we are pulled into this piece there are three layers, or levels of text on the plaster. The foreground is the original translation done in a traditional and timeless Roman font called Trajan. Ending this piece on the bottom right with the word HOPE, which is our light in this world. The verse from John runs through the center of and cuts through everything else, it is almost illuminated with the emphasis of the word “life” on the ground below the tree. On the base level of the plaster is part of the letter from the apostle Paul to the Romans. And this is done in a script for giving the sense of real humanity to the message of life in the light. Central to all of this is the framed landscape in full color. The tree is a metaphor for Christ. Set on the horizon of eternity with heaven above and earth below. Standing firm. A tree with all of its meaning of growth, of life, and a reaching for the light and the heavens. And the Life was Life to Live By : oil and plaster, mixed media : 70” x 120”
